Suwannee County is located in the northern part of the great state of Florida. Established on December 21, 1858, as part of an act designating the county's boundaries, it was named after the famous Suwannee River that runs through the area. The word "Suwannee" is believed to be derived from the Native American word "sawani," which means "echo river."

The county was initially inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Timucua tribe, who relied on the abundant natural resources in the region. Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, and after numerous changes between Spanish and British rule, eventually, in 1821, Florida was annexed to the United States as a territory.

During the 1800s, Suwannee County was an essential center for agriculture, particularly cotton and tobacco production. The county saw the rise of the turpentine and thick pine forests also boosted lumber industries. Growth and development accelerated in the region with the arrival of railroads, which connected Suwannee County to other parts of Florida and neighboring states.

Fun fact: One interesting feature of Suwannee County is the presence of numerous natural springs, such as the popular Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park.
