Washington County is located in the panhandle of the great state of Florida. Established on December 9, 1825, it was named in honor of George Washington, the first president of the United States. The county's geographical boundaries have experienced changes over time, with parts being carved out to create other neighboring counties. It covers an area of approximately 616 square miles, making it the 53rd largest county in Florida. The county seat is Chipley.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Muscogee (Creek) and Choctaw people. European settlers, primarily of Scottish and Irish descent, arrived in the 19th century, drawn by the abundant timber and fertile farmland. The area's development was spurred by the construction of railroads in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Washington County is known for its beautiful natural attractions, including rivers, lakes, and state parks. A fun fact about this region is that the county is home to Falling Waters State Park, which features the highest waterfall in Florida. The water flows down a 73-foot deep, 20-foot wide cylindrical pit and disappears into a sinkhole at the bottom. This natural wonder, along with other recreational opportunities, makes Washington County a popular tourist destination.
