Charlton County, in the great state of Georgia, has a rich historical background that dates back thousands of years. It was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, predominantly the Timucuan people, who left behind numerous burial mounds as evidence of their presence. European colonists first arrived in the area in the 16th century, eventually leading to the establishment of the English colony of Georgia in 1733.

In 1854, Charlton County was officially formed from portions of Camden County. It was named in honor of Robert M. Charlton, a prominent Georgia lawyer, jurist, and U.S. Senator who contributed significantly to the state's legal and political systems. The county seat, Folkston, was founded shortly after in 1855, and named after William Clark Folk, a lawyer and member of the Georgia General Assembly.

During its early years, the county's economy relied heavily on agriculture, notably cotton and timber. The construction of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1887 flourished transportation and allowed the growth of markets for these products. The region became known for its lumber and naval stores operations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A fun fact about Charlton County is that it is home to the Okefenokee Swamp, one of the largest and oldest freshwater swamps in North America. Covering roughly 700 square miles, the swamp is known for its diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife, including hundreds of species of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1937, attracts thousands of visitors annuallyoffering opportunities for outdoor activities such as camping, canoeing, and wildlife observation.
