Colquitt County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on February 25, 1856 from portions of Lowndes and Thomas counties. The county's economy was originally based on agriculture, with cotton being the primary crop. Colquitt County was named in honor of the distinguished southern politician, Walter Terry Colquitt, who was a U.S. Senator, member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and a well-respected Methodist minister.

The county seat of Colquitt County is Moultrie, which was named after another significant political figure, General William Moultrie. He was a Revolutionary War hero and the Governor of South Carolina.

Colquitt County, mainly an agricultural area, is known for its production of cotton, peanuts, and vegetables. The county experienced significant growth with the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century, which promoted trade and attracted more settlers to the region.
