It was established on May 15, 1821, and named after Marquis de Lafayette, a French general and hero who played a critical role in the American Revolutionary War. The county was formed from the Creek Indian territory and originally comprised parts of Carroll, Clayton, and Spalding counties. Fayetteville, named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, serves as the county seat.

Fayette County's rich history predominantly centers around agriculture, mostly cotton farming, which dominated the local economy for many years. The construction of the railways in the 19th century further boosted the economy, connecting Fayetteville to the city of Atlanta and allowing easy transportation of goods.
