.Franklin County is located in the northeastern part of the state of Georgia, United States, and was established on February 25, 1784. It is named in honor of founding father and statesman, Benjamin Franklin. The county seat, Carnesville, was named after Judge Thomas P. Carnes, a significant figure during the Revolutionary War.
In the early years, the county's economy revolved around agriculture, with cotton being the primary crop. Farmers also raised cattle and produced other crops such as corn and sweet potatoes. The region saw significant growth with the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century, opening up additional opportunities for trade and economic development.
One of the notable historical events tied to Franklin County is the Indian captivity of Benjamin Cleveland, a significant figure during the American Revolution. In his later life, Cleveland resided in Franklin County and was captured by a group of Cherokee Indians in 1793 but managed to escape after several weeks of captivity.
A fun fact about Franklin County is that it is home to Ty Cobb, one of the most famous baseball players in American history. Born in Banks County in 1886, he grew up in Royston, a town situated in Franklin County.
