Gwinnett County, located in the north-central part of Georgia, was established on December 15, 1818. It was named after Button Gwinnett, one of the three Georgia signatories of the United States Declaration of Independence. The county is part of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell Metropolitan Area and has its seat in Lawrenceville. In its early years, Gwinnett County was largely agricultural, with cotton as the primary cash crop.
During the Civil War, the county saw little action as it did not have any significant battles within its borders. After the war, like much of the South, Gwinnett County faced economic hardship due to the destruction of its infrastructure.
In the 20th century, Gwinnett County experienced significant industrial and commercial growth, partly due to its proximity to Atlanta. In the latter half of the century, this growth was accelerated by the construction of the Interstate Highway System, with Interstate 85 running through the county. The county also saw a population boom, transforming from a primarily rural area to a suburb of Atlanta.
One fun fact about Gwinnett County is that it is home to the third-largest Korean community in the United States. The county's prominent role as a diverse and thriving community is further demonstrated by its inclusion in several movies and TV shows. The city of Lawrenceville's historic downtown square, for instance, serves as a filming location for popular shows such as "The Vampire Diaries" and "Sleepy Hollow."
