Hart County, Georgia, is located in the northeastern part of the state and boasts a rich history dating back to its founding on December 7, 1853. It is named in honor of Nancy Hart, a female Revolutionary War-era heroine famous for her exploits in resisting the British forces. Covering an area of about 232 square miles, the county seat is Hartwell, which is also its largest city.
The area had been inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Cherokee and Creek, long before European settlers arrived. The first white settlers established themselves in the early 18th century and began building communities. In 1771, the Cherokee signed a treaty with the British, ceding the land that would become Hart County to the British Crown. Later on, the Treaty of 1818, known as the Treaty of the Cherokee Agency, turned over the land to the state of Georgia.
During the antebellum period, prior to the Civil War, Hart County saw rapid growth, driven primarily by cotton production and other agricultural activities. Like many other counties in the area, Hart County was significantly impacted by the Civil War and the ensuing Reconstruction era.
Fun Fact: Hartwell, the county seat, is home to the annual Lake Hartwell Dam Run, a popular 5K race that takes place every spring. The event offers participants the unique opportunity to run across the top of the Lake Hartwell Dam a location typically closed to the public while enjoying stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
