Heard County is located in the west-central part of the state of Georgia and was established on December 22, 1830. It was named in honor of Stephen Heard, a Revolutionary War veteran and a prominent political figure in Georgia during the late 18th and early 19th century. The county seat is Franklin, which was named after Benjamin Franklin.

The land where Heard County lies today was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Creek Indians. Following their removal as a result of the Indian Springs Treaty of 1825, white settlers began to move into the area. During the early years, agriculture became the mainstay of the Heard County economy, with cotton being the dominant crop.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the county saw gradual growth in population and industry. Nowadays, it retains a small-town charm with a strong sense of community.

A fun fact about Heard County is that it is home to the "Covered Bridge," which is located in the heart of the county. This historic landmark, also known as the Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge, was built in 1840 by Horace King, a former slave, and renowned bridge builder. It is the oldest and longest remaining wooden covered bridge in the state of Georgia, measuring around 391 feet in length. The bridge is still standing today and has become a symbol of pride and a popular tourist attraction for those visiting the region.
