Irwin County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 15, 1818. It was named in honor of Governor Jared Irwin, a two-term Georgia governor best known for his role in repealing the Yazoo Land Fraud, a massive political scandal in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The county was carved out of land acquired from the Creek Indians through the Treaty of Fort Jackson in 1814 and the Treaty of the Creek Agency in 1818.
The county seat of Irwin County is Ocilla, a small city that was founded in 1890. Irwin County has a rich agricultural history, with the production of various crops such as cotton, tobacco, and peanuts being central to its economy. Throughout most of the 19th century, the county saw steady growth as railroads were built through the region, connecting its agricultural products with nearby markets.
Irwin County played a role in the American Civil War, particularly in 1864 when Union General James H. Wilson invaded south Georgia, and the locals participated in several skirmishes against his forces. Like much of the South, the county faced economic hardship during the Reconstruction period after the war.
Today, Irwin County is known for its natural beauty, outdoor recreational activities, and historical attractions. The county is home to the Jefferson Davis Memorial Historic Site, dedicated to the capture of the Confederate president by Union troops in 1865.
