Macon County, located in the great state of Georgia, was created on December 14, 1837. It was named after Nathaniel Macon, a prominent North Carolinian statesman and U.S. Senator from 1815 to 1828. The county is situated in the central part of the state and originally comprised portions of Houston and Marion counties.

Macon County's history is closely tied to the settlement and development of the region. Before European colonization, the land was the ancestral homeland of the Muskogee (Creek) Native American tribe. Due to the 1832 Indian Springs Treaty, the Creek tribes were forced to relocate, opening the area for white settlement. After this, settlers began to establish plantations and harness the power of the Flint River to create industrial centers.

Oglethorpe, founded in 1839, serves as the county seat of Macon County. During the Civil War, Oglethorpe was home to a Confederate prison camp, housing Union captives in terrible conditions until its abandonment in 1864.

Agriculture is a key component of the county's history and its present, with cotton, peanuts, corn, and pecans being the main crops. The county's rich soil enabled it to become a significant contributor to the growth of the South's agricultural industry.

One fun fact about Macon County is the existence of the Georgia Rural Telephone Museum, located in Leslie, a city within the county. This museum houses one of the largest collections of telephone and telecommunication equipment in the country, going back to the late 1800s, and including antique switchboards, telephones, and related memorabilia.
