McDuffie County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on October 18, 1870. The county was named in honor of George McDuffie, a South Carolina native who served as a Congressman, a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, and as the 55th Governor of South Carolina. He was known for his oratory skills and strong support of states' rights.

The county seat is the city of Thomson, which was named after J. Edgar Thomson, a civil engineer, and the first chief engineer of the Geographical Survey of Georgia. As part of the Central Savannah River Area, McDuffie County borders the Savannah River, which separates Georgia and South Carolina.

Historically, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes like the Creek and the Cherokee. White settlers began to move into the area in the early 19th century, leading to conflicts between the Native Americans and the settlers. Ultimately, the Native American tribes were forced to relocate during the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

Before the creation of the McDuffie County, the land was part of Warren County and Columbia County. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, agriculture was the primary industry, with cotton and tobacco being the major crops. However, the local economy diversified over time, including industries like textile manufacturing, paper production and brick making.

Fun fact about McDuffie County: The Blind Willie McTell Blues Festival, held annually in Thomson, honors the legacy of Blues musician Blind Willie McTell, a Thomson native. He was a legendary bluesman known for his twelve-string guitar skills and soulful voice, contributing immensely to American blues and folk music.
