McIntosh County is a coastal county located in the southeastern part of Georgia, USA. Established on December 19, 1793, it was named after General Lachlan McIntosh, a Scottish-American military officer who served during the American Revolution. The county seat is Darien, a historic city founded in 1736 by Scottish Highlanders.
The region has a rich history, dating back to when the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto first encountered Native American tribes in the area in 1540. Later, in the early 18th century, the area became a center of the British colonial empire, with Fort King George built in 1721 as the southernmost outpost of the British Crown. The fort was abandoned in 1727 due to harsh living conditions and Native American raids.
McIntosh County played a role during the Revolutionary War, as well as the Civil War. In the 19th century, the economy of the county was heavily reliant on the plantation system, with enslaved Africans working the fields of rice, cotton, and sugar.
One fun fact about McIntosh County is that it is home to the Altamaha River, which is Georgia's largest free-flowing river. This vast river is often referred to as the "Little Amazon" or the "Amazon of the South", due to its unique ecosystem and abundant biodiversity, making it a popular destination for both ecological research and recreational activities.
