Established on December 3, 1832, the county was formed from a portion of Cherokee County, a part of the Cherokee Indian Nation's land. The name Murray County pays homage to a politician and statesman from Georgia, Thomas W. Murray, who was an advocate of Indian rights and worked tirelessly to foster relations between European settlers and Native Americans.
Throughout its history, Murray County has predominantly been an agricultural area, but it has also experienced growth and development due to the discovery of gold in the 19th century. Additionally, the county played a significant role in the Civil War. Forts were built (such as Fort Hetzel and Fort McGaughey), and soldiers were stationed in the region to protect the Union transportation lines.
