Muscogee County is located in the west-central part of Georgia, USA. Established on December 11, 1826, the county was carved out from portions of the state's existing Houston and Marion counties. The area was named after the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the indigenous people who originally inhabited this region.

In 1828, the city of Columbus was established as Muscogee County's county seat. The city played a significant role in the growth of industrialization in the region, with the county located near the Chattahoochee River providing water power to textile mills. The city prospered during the antebellum era due to its thriving cotton economy.

Muscogee County played an essential role during the Civil War. In 1860, the Confederate States of America was established, and Columbus became a significant industrial center, producing military supplies and equipment for the Confederate Army. The county suffered substantial destruction during the Battle of Columbus, which took place on April 16, 1865, and marked one of the last battles of the Civil War.

Muscogee County continued to grow and develop during the Reconstruction era and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The county entered the industrial age with various mills and factories established along the Chattahoochee River. In the 20th century, Columbus experienced growth in retail, trade, and service sectors as well.
