Putnam County is located in the state of Georgia, USA, and was established on December 10, 1807. It is named in honor of General Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general for the Continental Army in the American Revolution. The county seat is Eatonton, which was named after William Eaton, an officer and diplomat during the First Barbary War.

In its early days, the county's primary economic activities were agriculture and the production of textiles. Cotton, corn, and wheat were the main crops grown in the area. The first half of the 19th century saw the construction of several mansions, some of which still stand today, showcasing the opulence of the local plantation owners during this period.

During the Civil War, many battles occurred around Putnam County, but the area itself was spared any major conflict. In the years following the Civil War, the region slowly transitioned from plantation-based agriculture to smaller farms embracing a more diverse range of crops and livestock.

A fun fact about Putnam County is that it is home to the Uncle Remus Museum, which celebrates the stories of Joel Chandler Harris, a famous author from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Harris' stories, based on African American folktales, were set in and around the fictional Southern county of "Putmon," which was inspired by real-life Putnam County. These stories popularized the characters of Uncle Remus, Br'er Rabbit, and Br'er Fox, and they have had a lasting impact on American culture and folklore.
