Rockdale County is located in the great state of Georgia and was created on October 18, 1870. Named after Rockdale Church, which was named for the granite strata in the area, the county was carved out from portions of Newton and Henry Counties. With Conyers as its county seat, Rockdale County covers an area of approximately 131 square miles and is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.
The county's history dates back to the early 1800s when settlers were attracted to the area's fertile soil, dense forests, and abundant wildlife. The Georgia Railroad connected Rockdale County to Atlanta in 1845, facilitating trade and the shipment of goods.
During the Civil War, Rockdale County saw some action in the form of small skirmishes and troop movements but did not experience the devastation witnessed in other parts of Georgia. After the war, the area shifted from an agricultural-based economy to a more industrial one with the introduction of multiple cotton mills.
Interestingly, Rockdale County is home to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, a Trappist monastery founded in 1944. The monastery covers over 2,000 acres of land, including a large lake, forests, and spacious meadows, which provide a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The monks who reside there not only practice their faith but also use their lands for farming, woodworking, and hospitality services.
Fun Fact: The Georgia International Horse Park located in Conyers was one of the key venues for equestrian events during the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta. The park was specifically created for this event and has continued to serve as a premier venue for various sporting events and concerts, boosting the local economy and tourism in Rockdale County.
