Webster County is a small, rural county located in southwest Georgia, United States. It was created on December 16, 1853, from portions of Stewart County, and was named after the renowned American orator and statesman, Daniel Webster. The county, encompassing an area of approximately 210 square miles, has a rich history deeply rooted in agriculture and woodworking, with many families tracing their ancestry to the original settlers of the area.
The county seat, Preston, was established in 1856 and was named after William C. Preston, a U.S. Court Clerk in Stewart County. Preston remains a small, close-knit community that cherishes its history and the slow-paced, rural lifestyle typical of the region.
Webster County played a significant role during the Civil War. It was strategically located between two major Confederate supply depots, Eufaula in Alabama and Albany in Georgia, as well as the important railroad hub in Columbus. Confederate defensive works were established in the northeastern part of the county. Despite this, the county avoided major battle and widespread destruction like other parts of Georgia.
One fun fact about Webster County is that it is home to a rare geological formation called the "Rock House," located in the Bluffton area. The Rock House is a large sandstone boulder with a hollow cavity beneath, creating a natural shelter. The site is believed to have been used by Native Americans as a ceremonial center or a shelter for passing travelers. This unique landmark offers a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric past of the region, as well as its geological history.
