1. Darien is located in McIntosh County, Georgia, on the eastern coast of the state. It is situated on the Altamaha River and is often referred to as the "shrimp capital of the world" due to its thriving shrimp industry.
2. Darien has a rich history. It was settled by Scottish Highlanders in the early 1700s and became an important port for the export of naval stores, lumber, and cotton. During the Civil War, Darien was occupied by Union troops and was later burned by General William T. Sherman's army during his infamous "March to the Sea." Today, many of the historic homes and buildings in Darien have been restored and reflect the town's rich history.
