Abbeville, Georgia was incorporated as a town in 1883, and as a city in 1906. Here are some interesting facts about Abbeville:

- Abbeville was originally settled by the Creek Indians and was known as "Oskechee". The name "Abbeville" was given by early French explorers who thought the area resembled the plains of Abbeville in France.

- Abbeville is home to the oldest Masonic lodge in Georgia, the Abbeville Lodge No. 122. It was established in 1824, and the current building was constructed in 1855.

- Abbeville was the site of a famous lynching in 1918. A young African-American man named Henry "Peg" Gilbert was accused of killing a white farmer. Despite his claims of innocence, a lynch mob of hundreds of people seized Gilbert and burned him alive in front of a cheering crowd.

- Abbeville has a rich history of agriculture and is known for its pecans, peaches, and peanuts.

- Abbeville is also known for its historic homes and buildings, including the Wilcox County Courthouse, built in 1903 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

- Abbeville hosts an annual "Pioneer Day" festival, which includes a parade, arts and crafts vendors, food, and live music.
