The Official Hawaii State Flower
Hawaii State Flower
Hibiscus

The Hibiscus, also known as the rosemallow, is the Hawaii state flower. It is an evergreen perennial shrub with large, showy and brightly colored flowers that vary in color from white to red, pink, yellow and purple. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world, the Hibiscus is the national flower of Malaysia and is widely used in herbal medicine. It has many symbolic meanings, including passion, beauty and grace.

The Hibiscus was adopted as the official state flower of Hawaii in 1988. It was chosen to represent Hawaii after a long-time resident of the state, Mrs. George R. Carter, proposed it. The Legislature of Hawaii chose the Hibiscus as the official state flower to honor Mrs. Carter's suggestion and to recognize the importance of the flower in the Hawaiian culture. The Hibiscus has come to symbolize the beauty, grace and hospitality of the islands of Hawaii. Many hybrid varieties of Hibiscus have been cultivated on the islands of Hawaii.
