Davenport, Iowa was founded in 1836 by Antoine Le Claire and several other pioneers. The city is named after Colonel George Davenport, a fur trader and one of the earliest settlers of the area.

During the mid-19th century, Davenport became an important hub for river commerce and transportation. The city played a key role in the westward expansion of the United States, with immigrants and pioneers passing through on their way to settle in new territories.

In the early 20th century, Davenport became known for its thriving manufacturing industry, particularly in the production of farm equipment and railroad cars. The city was also home to several notable architects, including William LeBaron Jenney, who designed many of the city's iconic buildings.
