Here are a few interesting facts about De Soto, Iowa:

1. De Soto was originally named "Boca" when it was founded in 1849, but later changed its name to De Soto in honor of the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto.

2. The famous American artist Grant Wood (known for works such as "American Gothic") painted a mural for the De Soto Post Office in 1940. The mural, titled "The Early Settlers of Dallas County," is still on display today.

3. De Soto is home to the De Soto National Wildlife Refuge, which provides crucial habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife.

4. In 2005, De Soto made national news when a tornado caused extensive damage to the town. Amazingly, no one was injured in the tornado.

5. The town hosts an annual "Watermelon Day" festival in August, which includes a parade, live music, and of course, plenty of watermelon.
