Benton County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Iowa. Established on December 21, 1837, it was named in honor of U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton from Missouri. The county was formed out of a region originally inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Sac and Fox. European-American settlers began to arrive in the 1830s and 1840s, drawn by the fertile lands ideal for farming.

The county seat is situated in Vinton, a city that was laid out by David and Celia Bratton in 1849. Benton County played a role during the American Civil War, as it served as a notable supply route for the Union Army. Agriculture has been and continues to be the primary industry in the county, with corn and soybean production making up a significant portion of the economy.

A fun fact about Benton County is that it is home to the Cedar Valley Nature Trail, a 52-mile-long scenic trail that stretches from Waterloo to Cedar Rapids. The trail offers visitors the chance to experience Iowa's diverse landscape, as it passes through wetlands, forests, and farmlands while taking them through multiple towns and cities.
