Crawford County is located in the great state of Iowa, in the midwestern United States. It was established on January 15, 1851, and named after William Harris Crawford, a prominent American politician who served as the United States Secretary of War and Secretary of the Treasury during the early 19th century.

The history of Crawford County is closely tied to the settlement and development of the broader region. European-American settlers began moving into the area in the early 1850s, attracted by the fertile land and the promise of a better life. Before European settlements, the region was inhabited by native tribes, including the Sioux, Omaha, and Potawatomi.

During the latter half of the 19th century, the expansion of the railway system played a crucial role in the development of Crawford County. The Chicago and North Western Railway and the Illinois Central Railroad both extended their lines into the county, bringing new settlers, commerce, and industry to the area. Over time, agriculture became the backbone of the county's economy, and today, it remains a significant industry.

One fun fact about Crawford County is that it is home to the largest popcorn ball in the world! In 2009, the citizens of the county seat, Denison, came together to create a massive popcorn ball weighing 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg) and measuring more than eight feet (2.4 meters) in diameter. This gigantic popcorn ball managed to break the world record, putting the town of Denison and Crawford County on the map for a quirky and entertaining achievement.
