Decatur County, named after Stephen Decatur Jr., a naval hero in the War of 1812, is situated in the great state of Iowa. It was established on January 13, 1846, and then officially organized in 1851, with its county seat and largest city being Leon. The county has a rich history with the development of railroads in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which played a significant role in promoting trades and settlement in the area.

Agriculture has always been an essential part of Decatur County's economy, with corn and soybean farming being the main agricultural products. The county is also known for its picturesque landscape, characterized by rolling hills, forests, and lakes. The Nine Eagles State Park and Slip Bluff Park are popular outdoor destinations in the region, drawing in visitors with their recreational opportunities and natural beauty.

One fun fact about Decatur County is that it is the starting point of the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail, a 1,300-mile route that thousands of Mormon pioneers traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah, between 1846 and 1869. This trail played a significant role in American history, as it marked the westward migration of Mormons seeking religious freedom and a better life in the West.
