Henry County is located in the southeastern region of the great state of Iowa. It was established on December 7, 1836, and named in honor of General Henry Dodge, an early settler and the first Governor of Wisconsin Territory. The county seat is Mount Pleasant, which was founded by Presley Saunders in 1835 and became the center of activity for the region. Covering an area of approximately 437 square miles, Henry County is home to several smaller towns such as Winfield, Wayland, and New London.
In the mid-19th century, Old Berlin, now called Wayland, was the center for the utopian Amish-Mennonite Community, organized by Goldschmidt, a German immigrant. The Amana Colonies, just north of Henry County, were also established around the same time as Henry County by a group of German-speaking settlers seeking religious freedom. Both communities thrived, increasing the German influence in the region.
A fun fact about Henry County is that it was a significant stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African-Americans to escape to freedom in the 19th century.
