Ida County, located in the northwestern part of the great state of Iowa, was established on January 15, 1851. It is named after Ida Smith, the first child of European settlers to be born in the area. Initially, the county was left unorganized until January 12, 1853, when it was finally attached to Woodbury County.

The first permanent settlers in Ida County arrived in 1856, and the county's overall population began to increase slowly. In 1871, the thriving town of Ida Grove was founded, known as the heart of Ida County, and was eventually designated as the county seat. This development played a crucial role in shaping the county's future.

Over the years, Ida County sustained itself primarily through agricultural activities. This region of Iowa is famous for its fertile soil and farm-based economy, with corn and soybeans being the primary crops.

One fun fact about Ida County is its whimsical collection of cast-iron "Hobo Stoves" in Ida Grove. These unique sculptures were designed by local artist and business magnate Byron LeRoy Godbersen as a tribute to the creativity, resilience, and ingenuity of the area's pioneers. These quirky stoves can be found scattered throughout Ida Grove, adding a touch of artistic charm to the cityscape.
