Jasper County, located in the heart of Iowa, USA, was established on December 21, 1846, and named after Sergeant William Jasper, an American Revolutionary War hero. The county is part of the Des Moines-Ames-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area and spans 733 square miles. Newton serves as the county seat.
Initially, settlers in the county were focused on agriculture and trading, which became easier when the Mississippi and Missouri Railroad made its way through Jasper County in 1866. Coal mining also became an essential part of the county's economy by the late 19th century, with its peak lasting until the 1920s.
One fun fact about Jasper County is the presence of the historical Maytag Corporation headquarters, founded in 1893 in Newton by Frederick Louis Maytag. The company originally manufactured farm equipment and later became famous for its washing machines and other home appliances. Today, even though the headquarters has moved, the Maytag legacy remains an integral part of Jasper County's history.
