Mitchell County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Iowa, with its county seat in Osage. Established on January 15, 1851, it was named in honor of John Mitchel, an Irish patriot and journalist who stood for Irish independence and was exiled to the US. The county originally consisted of 16 townships, with many settlers migrating from the eastern United States, Europe, and other parts of the world.
During the 19th century, Mitchell County's farmland and rich natural resources, primarily timber and limestone, attracted many settlers. The fertile soil and abundant water supply from various rivers and streams provided excellent conditions for agriculture. As a result, farming became the primary economic activity, with grain production, and livestock rearing flourishing in the region.
Several towns formed in the county, with Osage becoming the county seat due to its early establishment and central location. The railroad played an essential role in Mitchell County's development, providing better transportation and contributing significantly to the economic growth of the area.
A fun fact about Mitchell County is that it is home to the Mitchell County Fair, an annual event with roots dating back to 1874. The fair showcases diverse agricultural and industrial exhibits, carnival rides, art and craft displays, live music, and other entertainment, serving as a platform for community bonding and celebration of Mitchell County's agriculture-driven history.
