Page County, located in the southwestern region of the great state of Iowa, was established on February 24, 1847. Named in honor of Captain John Page, a participant and hero in the Battle of Palo Alto during the Mexican-American War, this county's rich history began with its first permanent settlers arriving in the early 1840s.
The county seat, Clarinda, was founded in 1851 and was named after Clarinda Buck, who was the daughter of an early settler, Isaac Lewis. Another noteworthy town in the county is Shenandoah, which was established in 1870 when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad extended its operation into the area. Interestingly, Iowa's well-known nickname "The Tall Corn State" was largely inspired by the corn fields in Page county where stalks have reached up to 16 feet.
One fun fact about Page County is its connection to the "Everly Brothers," a famous American rock and roll duo. Don Everly, one half of the duo, was born in Brownsville, Kentucky, in 1937, while his younger brother Phil was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1939. However, the family moved to Shenandoah, Iowa in 1945 and started performing on KMA and KFNF radio stations, which were located in this county. This musical connection has made the county an important part of the history of American rock and roll.
