.Pottawattamie County, located in the great state of Iowa, has a rich and varied history. Established on February 24, 1847, the county was initially part of the Wisconsin Territory, before becoming part of the Iowa Territory in 1838, and eventually the state of Iowa in 1846. The county is named in honor of the Potawatomi Native American tribe, who once inhabited the land before being forced to leave due to the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
Pottawattamie County played an important role during the Mormon Pioneer migration in the 19th century. The area was a key stopping point for thousands of Latter-Day Saints travelling westward from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah. Kanesville, now known as Council Bluffs, served as the winter quarters for the Mormon pioneers, and it was here that Brigham Young was sustained as the leader of the Church in 1847.
In the 20th century, Pottawattamie County's economy was primarily driven by agriculture and industry. Some of the major industries in the area included meatpacking plants and food processing facilities. Additionally, the county was known for its horticultural contributions, particularly in the cultivation of fine fruits.
One fun fact about Pottawattamie County is that it is home to the Squirrel Cage Jail, located in Council Bluffs. The unique three-story, rotating jail was built in 1885 and is one of only three remaining examples of its kind in the United States. It has been transformed into a museum, giving visitors an insightful glimpse into the history of the county and the unusual structure of the jail.
