Kootenai County is located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Idaho. Established on December 22, 1864, the county was named after the Kootenai tribe, who lived in the region for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. The Kootenai were a Native American tribe with a rich culture, living off the land through fishing, hunting, and gathering.

In the early 19th century, explorers and fur traders reached the area, and the establishment of the Oregon Trail in the 1840s further opened the region to Euro-American settlers. With the discovery of gold in nearby regions during the 1860s, Kootenai County saw a significant increase in its population as miners and prospectors arrived to try their luck. The establishment of Fort Sherman in 1878 added stability and infrastructure, ultimately leading to the incorporation of the city of Coeur d'Alene in 1887.

The timber industry also played a significant role in Kootenai County's history, with the arrival of the Northern Pacific and other railroads in the late 19th century providing a much-needed boost to the transportation and logging industries. The vast natural resources of the area, in combination with factors like the construction of Coeur d'Alene lake's hydroelectric dams during the early 20th century, contributed to the county's economic growth.
