Latah County is located in the northern part of the great state of Idaho, in the United States. Established on May 14, 1888, the county was created from sections of Nez Perce County, and its seat is situated in Moscow, Idaho. Latah County is part of the Palouse region, which encompasses parts of Idaho and Washington, known for its rolling landscape formed by wind-blown silt deposited during the Pleistocene epoch.

The name "Latah" is derived from the Nez Perce language and means "the place of pine trees and the pestle," which likely refers to the traditional use of wooden pestles by Indigenous tribes to grind camas root, a staple food in their diet.

Latah County encompasses nearly 1,078 square miles and is home to the University of Idaho, which was founded in 1889, making it the state's oldest public university. The county played an essential role in the development of the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily due to the construction of the railroad network connecting it to the rest of the country.

Logging and agriculture have always been pivotal to Latah County's economy, with the fertile soil of the Palouse making it a prime location for wheat and legume farming, which continues to this day.

Fun fact: Latah County holds the quirky distinction of being the only county in the United States established by an act of Congress, the result of political maneuverings by Moscow's founder, Temperance advocate Elijah Brown, who was determined to undermine the whisky trade monopolized by the city of Lewiston.
