Payette County, located in the southwestern part of Idaho, was established on February 28, 1917. This county, originally a part of Canyon County, was named after the Payette River, which runs through the area. The river itself was named after Francois Payette, a French-Canadian fur trapper who worked for the North West Company in the region during the early 19th century. He is known to be one of the earliest Europeans to explore the area.
The region has a rich history that dates back even further, with Native American tribes such as the Shoshone, Paiute, and Bannock Indians who once inhabited the area before European settlers arrived. As settlers moved westward, Payette County became an important location along the famed Oregon Trail, with many pioneers traveling through it to reach the fertile lands of the Oregon Territory during the mid-19th century.
Agriculture and livestock continue to be important industries in Payette County, as the fertile soil and mild climate make it ideal for fruit production such as apples, plums, cherries, and peaches.
