Clinton County is located in the southern part of Illinois and is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The county was formed in 1824 out of Washington, Fayette, and Bond Counties and named in honor of the seventh Governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton, who played a significant role in the construction of the Erie Canal.
The area was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Kaskaskia, Peoria, and Cahokia. After the arrival of European settlers, specifically French explorers and missionaries in the late 1600s and early 1700s, the native population gradually decreased due to conflicts and diseases.
The first permanent European settlers arrived in the early 1800s, mostly of German descent. They established numerous communities within the county, including Carlyle, the county seat founded in 1818. Agriculture became the primary industry in the area, with fertile soils perfect for growing crops like corn, wheat, and soybeans.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Clinton County continued to develop with the construction of railroads and new industries emerging like coal mining and manufacturing. Today, agriculture remains essential to the local economy, along with healthcare, education, and other services.
One fun fact about Clinton County is that it is home to the Carlyle Lake, the largest man-made lake in Illinois, and an important recreational destination. The lake was created in 1967 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed a dam on the Kaskaskia River. The lake attracts numerous visitors every year for fishing, boating, swimming, and other outdoor activities.
