Effingham County, located in the great state of Illinois, was established on February 15, 1831. It was named in honor of Thomas Howard, the 3rd Earl of Effingham, who was an advocate for American colonists' rights during the build-up to the American Revolutionary War. The county's seat is the city of Effingham.

In its early years, the county was inhabited by Native American tribes, followed by European settlers in the early 1800s. Primarily an agricultural region, the industry began to thrive with the development of the railroad system during the 19th century. This brought economic growth and prosperity to the county, with a focus on corn and wheat.

Throughout its history, Effingham County has grown and evolved into a hub for transportation and commerce, thanks to its location at the intersection of two major highways Interstate 57 and Interstate 70. The county has a diverse economic base that includes manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and other sectors, reflecting its spirit of resilience and adaptability.

One fun fact about Effingham County is its landmark, the Cross at the Crossroads. Standing at 198 feet tall, this monumental cross is one of the largest in the United States and attracts thousands of visitors each year, symbolizing faith and unity.
