Knox County, located in the western part of the great state of Illinois, has a rich historical background. It was established on January 13, 1825, and named after General Henry Knox, a prominent figure in the American Revolutionary War who later became the country's first Secretary of War. The county's seat is Galesburg, a town with a unique history in its own right.

Galesburg was founded in 1837 by Presbyterian minister Reverend George Washington Gale, who aimed to establish a manual labor college in the area. This became Knox College, which opened its doors in 1841 and still operates as a liberal arts college today.

Knox County played an important role in American history as a hub for the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses helping African American slaves escape to freedom. Galesburg, in particular, is home to several documented "stations" on the Underground Railroad, and the community was known for its strong anti-slavery sentiment.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Knox County's economy was driven mainly by agriculture and the railroad industry. The county was home to the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad, which employed many residents and powered the local economy.

A fun fact about this region is that Knox County was the birthplace of Carl Sandburg, a renowned American poet, journalist, and biographer. Born in Galesburg in 1878, Sandburg is celebrated for his writings about the American people, particularly the working class. The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site, which preserves his birthplace and provides programming related to his life and work, can be visited in Galesburg.
