Logan County is located in the heart of the great state of Illinois, in the central part of the state. The county was established on February 15, 1839, and was named in honor of Dr. John Logan, a prominent physician and state representative. The city of Lincoln, named after President Abraham Lincoln, serves as the county seat, and it is the only city in the world that was named after and christened by Lincoln himself before he became president.
Prior to the arrival of the first white settlers in the 1810s and 1820s, Logan County was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Kickapoo, Pottawatomie, and Delaware. The fertile prairies attracted farmers, who turned Logan County into a prosperous agricultural region. In the mid-1800s, the railroad industry rapidly developed in the area, contributing to the growth of local towns and cities.
One fun fact about Logan County is that it is home to the world's largest covered wagon, known as the Railsplitter Covered Wagon. Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, the wagon measures 40 feet long and 12 feet wide and features a 12-foot-tall fiberglass sculpture of Abraham Lincoln. This unique attraction is located in Lincoln, Illinois, and symbolizes the region's significant connection to the 16th U.S. president.
