Sangamon County is located in the central part of the great state of Illinois, USA. Established on January 30, 1821, the county was named after the Sangamon River, which runs through it. The river's name is derived from a Pottawatomie Native American word "Sain-guee-mon" meaning "where there is plenty to eat."

Springfield, the county seat, was founded in 1819 and later became the state capital of Illinois in 1837 after serving as the temporary capital from 1818 to 1819. Springfield is famously known as the home of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. Before his presidency, Lincoln lived and practiced law in the city from 1837 to 1861.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Sangamon County's economy was predominantly based on agriculture, with corn and soybeans being the primary crops. The county also played a significant role in transportation, as Springfield was a major stop on historic Route 66.

In terms of population growth, Sangamon County witnessed its most significant boom between the 1940s and 1960s. As of 2020, the county's population stands at approximately 190,000.

Fun Fact: Sangamon County is home to the Dana-Thomas House, a unique architectural marvel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Constructed in 1902 for Susan Lawrence Dana, this house is an excellent example of Wright's Prairie Style and has been preserved as a historic site for visitors to enjoy.
