Front of the US quarter dollar coin   Illinois State Quarter

The Illinois state quarter was created in 2003 and features a design by Charles L. Vickers. The design features a depiction of Abraham Lincoln and a young eagle, representing the state's commitment to the preservation of freedom and justice. The states motto, "State Sovereignty, National Union," is inscribed at the bottom of the coin. The state bird, the cardinal, is featured in the left field, and the state flower, the violet, is featured in the right field. The date of Illinois' statehood, 1818, is also included. The back of the coin features a silhouette of the state Capitol building in Springfield. The design is meant to represent the state's commitment to democracy.

The second Illinois State Quarter

The Illinois National Park Quarter was issued in 2017 as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The quarter features Starved Rock State Park, located in north-central Illinois along the Illinois River. The reverse of the coin features a scene of a French-Canadian fur trader, an Illiniwek Native American, and a bald eagle soaring over the park. The image is meant to represent the cultural exchange that occurred in the area between French-American settlers and the local Illiniwek tribe. The coin also features the inscriptions "Starved Rock", "Illinois", "E Pluribus Unum", and "2017". The obverse of the coin features a portrait of George Washington, a former president of the United States.

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program was created by the United States Mint in 2010. The program seeks to honor the beauty, history, and culture of each of the 50 states, 5 U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. Each quarter in the program highlights a national park or other national site in the state or territory being honored. The program is scheduled to run until 2021 and will honor 56 national sites in total.
