Nauvoo was founded in 1839 by Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It became the headquarters of the church and was one of the fastest-growing cities in Illinois at the time.

Nauvoo is known for its historic architecture, including many buildings constructed during the era of the Latter-day Saints' residence, such as the Nauvoo Temple and the Carthage Jail, where Joseph Smith was assassinated in 1844.

After the death of Joseph Smith, most of the Latter-day Saints left Nauvoo and moved to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. However, the LDS Church maintains a presence in Nauvoo and has restored many of the historic buildings.

Today, Nauvoo is a popular tourist destination with thousands of visitors each year coming to explore the city's history and unique culture. It is home to several museums and historic sites, including the Nauvoo State Park, which features a replica of a 19th-century log cabin.
