A fun fact about Palmyra, Illinois is that it was once home to the world's largest outdoor refrigerator factory. In 1944, the Frigidaire Corporation built a plant in Palmyra to produce refrigerators using newly developed Freon gas. The plant employed over 3,000 workers at its peak in the 1950s and was a major employer in the area until it closed in the 1980s. Today, the site is home to the Macoupin County Historical Society Museum, which has exhibits on local history and the Frigidaire factory.
