Grant County is located in east-central Indiana and is part of the state's rich cultural and historical landscape. Established on February 10, 1831, it is named in honor of Captain Samuel A. Grant, a hero during the War of 1812. The county seat is Marion, which was founded in 1831 and named after General Francis Marion, a war hero from the Revolutionary War. The county covers an area of approximately 414 square miles.

Initial settlements in Grant County were made along the Mississinewa River, and its fertile land proved ideal for agriculture. In the mid-to-late 19th century, with the development of railroads, Grant County experienced growth in both its population and economy. The county played a significant role in Indiana's natural gas boom during the late 1800s, which fueled industrial development in the area.

One notable fun fact about Grant County is its connection to James Dean, the iconic American film actor. Dean was born in Marion, Grant County, on February 8, 1931, and spent much of his childhood in the area. Fairmount, another town in Grant County, hosts the James Dean Festival annually, which celebrates the life and legacy of the Hollywood legend.
