Jackson County, Indiana
.Jackson County is located in the great state of Indiana, covering an area of 513 square miles. Established on January 8, 1816, the county was named after General Andrew Jackson, who later became the seventh President of the United States. Jackson County is part of the Seymour, Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The history of Jackson County can be traced back to Native Americans who settled in the region; among them were the Lenape (Delaware) and the Piankeshaw people. European-American settlers, mostly migrating from northern Kentucky and southern Ohio, began to populate the area in the early 19th century.
Seymour, the largest city in the county, was founded in 1852 by Meedy Shields, a civil engineer who also worked on the construction of the Indianapolis and Louisville Railroad. The city functioned as a hub for both transportation and industry, supporting rapid population growth.
A significant historical event in Jackson County was the Battle of Brownstown, which occurred during the War of 1812. The battle took place on August 24, 1812, near the town of Brownstown and involved a conflict between the native Potawatomi warriors and a small party of Indiana Rangers.
The fun fact about Jackson County is that it is the birthplace of Robert Allen Grant, also known as "The King of Hobos." Grant was a writer and poet who gained fame for his works based around the hobo lifestyle. He injected intelligence and dignity into his portrayal of hobos, and his writing reached nationwide prominence during the Great Depression.
