Jennings County is located in the southeast region of the great state of Indiana. It was established on February 1, 1817, and named after Jonathan Jennings, the first governor of Indiana. The county seat is the town of Vernon. Jennings County is part of the North Vernon, IN Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, notably the Shawnee, Miami, and Kickapoo. Europeans started settling in the early 1800s, mostly consisting of Scots-Irish and German immigrants, shortly after the end of the War of 1812. Agriculture played a significant role in the county's early development, and it is still an important industry today.

As the county seat, Vernon played a crucial role in the growth of Jennings County. Established in 1815, Vernon is the smallest town in Indiana with a population of around 300 people. It is one of the few towns in the country that has its entire town listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This can be attributed to its well-preserved architecture from the 19th century, contributing to its charm and historical significance.

Fun fact: The National Register of Historic Places listing in Vernon has made the entire town a cherished destination for history buffs and tourists. The Vernon Historic District includes a wide variety of architectural styles such as Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne, reflecting the changes and growth of the community throughout the history of Jennings County.
