Lake County is located in the northwest corner of the great state of Indiana, bordering Lake Michigan and the state of Illinois. Established on February 15, 1837, it is the second most populous county in Indiana, covering an area of 626 square miles. Lake County was formed from the western part of the previously existing St. Joseph County, and the name "Lake" was derived from its proximity to Lake Michigan.

The lands in Lake County were originally home to several Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, Miami, and Wea, among others. The region would go on to play an influential role in the trading industry, with the lake's access to vital trade routes.

Significant industrial growth began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the expansion of the steel industry. The establishment of the U.S. Steel Corporation's Gary Works in 1906 marked a turning point for the county, boosting its population and economy. Gary, named after the founder of U.S. Steel, Elbert Henry Gary, is the county's largest city and has a rich history as a booming industrial hub.

Lake County is a culturally diverse region, home to people of various ethnic backgrounds. It has seen waves of immigration and migration over the years, contributing to its vibrant cultural scene. The area is well-known for its park system and environmental conservation efforts, with the Indiana Dunes National Park as one of its most popular destinations.

Fun Fact: Lake County is home to the first ever professional baseball game, played on May 4, 1871, in Hobart, Indiana. It was a game between the Forest Citys of Cleveland and the Kekionga of Fort Wayne that took place in the nearby town of Hobart, where Cleveland defeated Fort Wayne 4-2.
