The county was named in honor of General Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War hero known as the "Swamp Fox" for his impressive guerrilla tactics. The county covers an area of 403 square miles and is home to Indianapolis, the state capital and largest city in Indiana.

The area was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, such as the Delaware (Lenape) tribe who settled along the White River. The formation of Marion County was part of the ongoing westward expansion of the United States, as settlers sought opportunities for farming and trade.
