Steuben County, located in the northeastern corner of the great state of Indiana, was officially established on February 28, 1835. Steuben is named in honor of Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a Prussian military officer who became a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and was key in training the troops at Valley Forge.

The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans, specifically the Miami and Potawatomi tribes. As European settlers arrived in the early 19th century, they began to establish communities and develop the land for agriculture and industry. Angola, the county seat of Steuben County, was founded in 1838 by Thomas Gale and Cornelius Gilmore.

Throughout the 19th century, the county became more developed, and by the 20th century, it had experienced a surge in industry and infrastructure, including the construction of railroads, mills, and factories. The region has long been known for its picturesque landscapes, particularly its 101 natural lakes that offer a myriad of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

One fun fact about Steuben County is that it is home to Pokagon State Park, which was established in 1925 as the fifth Indiana state park. The park, named after Potawatomi leaders Leopold and Simon Pokagon, spans over 1,200 acres and offers a variety of activities such as camping, hiking, fishing, and swimming, along with a popular winter attraction, the Toboggan Run.
