Named in honor of Captain William Wells, a War of 1812 hero, the county is situated in the northeastern part of Indiana. Captain Wells, who was captured and raised by the Miami Indians, later aided the U.S. during the conflict, contributing significantly to the nation in his career.

The county consists of several townships, including Chester, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Lancaster, Liberty, Nottingham, and Rockcreek.
